Angels on Earth

Here I lay, restless in bed

My pillow propped behind my head

I look at the clock, a quarter past three

So I begin to name some things that I see

There’s a figure that moves across the hall

Uplifting patients, like a fisher and his trawl

With exhausted eyes, yet gives it their all

Responding to cries, screams, rings, and calls

Another stays still, with a patient like me

With tears in their eyes, on bended knee

As they cross the bridge from life to death

“I’m here with you” is whispered, with calming breath

Away from their loved ones, for hours on end

Putting others first, our sicknesses mend

They risk their lives, like soldiers at war

So the sick can see their families, once more

If selfless was a person, they embody it well

Ready to serve with just one push of a bell

A friend, an advocate, and everything you need

They do it all with a smile, without any plea

With this, I know and believe to be true

That there are angels that walk among us too

Not dressed in white, or with a halo in view

But a nurse in scrubs and their heroic crew
